Autism Community in Indiana Wins Medicaid Policy Revision

Michiana families are celebrating after the Family and Social Services Administration (FSSA) revised its proposed Medicaid changes, which would have significantly limited therapy options for Hoosier children with autism who rely on Medicaid.

WNDU 16 News Now was the only local station to report last month on the initial proposal, which would have imposed strict limits on ABA therapy—capping treatment at 30 hours per week with a lifetime limit of three years.

According to WTHR, the revised plan will now function on a tiered system. Children diagnosed at Level 1 will receive no more than 30 hours of therapy per week. Those at Level 2 will be limited to 32 hours per week, while Level 3 diagnoses will allow up to 38 hours per week.

Additionally, children classified under Levels 2 and 3 will have the opportunity to receive therapy based on a doctor’s or healthcare provider’s prescription.

If approved, these limitations will take effect on April 1.

LOGAN, a well-known nonprofit advocating for families affected by autism, played a significant role in raising awareness about these Medicaid changes. Organization officials credit media coverage, particularly WNDU’s reporting, with helping to drive these updates.

“It was amazing. I had calls, emails, messages on all platforms from families, community partners of LOGAN reaching out and saying they saw this news update from WNDU and they were so grateful they have the information right away,” said Kristin Wier, chief program officer for therapy services at LOGAN. “They did email their legislators, they emailed members of LOGAN, their therapist, their providers, our providers, also reached out. It was a huge team effort.”

Wier emphasized that ABA therapy remains one of the most effective treatments for individuals with autism and is widely regarded as the gold standard in therapy.

This development comes as Indiana Gov. Mike Braun prepares to sign an executive order on Wednesday afternoon addressing the rising Medicaid costs associated with this therapy. In a news release sent to media outlets, his office stated that the order aims to manage costs while “maintaining quality of care for Hoosiers who use the treatment.”
