A quick-witted good Samaritan sprang into action, helping save an autistic man who jumps into Jamaica Bay after a sudden and dramatic escape from a Brooklyn pier.
The incident unfolded on a Tuesday morning around 10:30 a.m. at Canarsie Pier in Brooklyn. A 25-year-old man, who is autistic, was attending a field trip with other adults and their caretakers when, without warning, he broke away from the group. In a split second, the young man jumped off the pier into the waters below.

Witnessing this alarming event, a 49-year-old man who was nearby did not hesitate for a moment. He immediately rushed into the water, diving in without concern for his own safety, to try and save the young man from the cold, choppy waters of Jamaica Bay.
Fortunately, NYPD Emergency Service Unit officers were already in the vicinity, ready to assist in the critical rescue operation. These skilled officers quickly arrived at the scene, offering their expertise to help pull both men out of the water and ensure their safety.
Both the young man and the good Samaritan were promptly taken to a nearby hospital, where they were treated for minor injuries. Although shaken by the event, their quick and heroic efforts ensured that both men would survive, and their prompt actions were a testament to the importance of looking out for one another in times of crisis.
