Florida Governor Ron DeSantis announced on Monday a significant investment of over $2.2 billion dedicated to enhancing services for individuals with autism and other developmental disabilities in the state. This substantial funding aims to improve the quality of care and support available to those who need it most.
At a news conference held at The Els Center of Excellence, Governor DeSantis was joined by Taylor Hatch, Director of the Agency for Persons with Disabilities. The Els Center of Excellence, renowned for its state-of-the-art programs and services tailored to individuals with autism, served as a fitting backdrop for this important announcement.
According to the governor’s office, this funding will be allocated through the iBudget waiver, a critical component of Florida’s Future Budget. The allocation includes:
- Nearly $200 million designated for an across-the-board increase for iBudget waiver providers, ensuring that service providers can continue to deliver high-quality support.
- $64.8 million aimed at enrolling additional individuals in crisis onto the iBudget waiver, addressing immediate needs and expanding access to vital services.
- $55.7 million to transition individuals currently in pre-enrollment categories into full enrollment, further extending the reach of support services.
- Over $40 million allocated to support community projects dedicated to autism and other developmental disabilities, fostering inclusive environments and innovative solutions.
Additionally, the funding includes $1 million specifically earmarked for the Els Center of Excellence’s recreational complex. This complex is designed to provide a sensory-friendly environment, catering to the unique needs of children with autism and enhancing their recreational experiences.
